Overview
Ancient Words will present a concise overview of the characteristics which distinguished the ‘honour and shame’ society that pervaded 1st Century Palestine in the time of Jesus. Building upon these understandings the day will explore, in a practical manner, how the teaching of scripture in the classroom can be enriched by students understanding the cultural context underpinning the Gospel stories.
 
In particular, the workshop activities will explore the cultural dimension of selected parables through the integration of high-order thinking strategies along with appropriate workshop tasks.   In addition, the presentation will explore a range of less familiar influences on our understanding of the Scriptures including: Challenge and Riposte; Patronage; Kinship; Gender and the Role of Women; a Limited Goods Society; Hospitality; and the Power of Signs.

Aims
With this program participants will:
  • Explore, in depth, the influence of an Honour and Shame culture on the Scriptures;
  • Enhance their understanding of the multiple ‘messages’ contained in the Scriptures, particularly from a cultural perspective;
  • Develop an understanding of the DEEP pedagogical framework, with special reference to the RE classroom;
  • Experience an array of ‘higher order’ thinking strategies to enhance classroom pedagogy;
  • Work collaboratively in small learning teams to ‘road test’ selected examples of quality pedagogical activities; and
  • Engage in reflective opportunities to assist in the transference of learning outcomes into classroom practice.
Duration
​This one-day formation program combines storytelling, scripture and the use of metaphors to highlight the key themes. Participants are given frequent opportunities for personal reflection and discussion with their peers so as to ascertain the relevance of the input to the unique context of their school community.
