Christian Meditation

Induction, RE and Formation
Target Audience:  RE Teachers

Storytelling and RE will be offered with Christian Meditation in a one day of input and reflection.
An additional day for demonstration of learnings in schools will follow.
Overview
Jesus prayed in a contemplative manner and was a teacher of contemplation. This is revealed to us through scripture with His teaching of the necessity for our lives to include stillness, silence and simplicity. These are the essential elements of Christian Meditation.

Most children have a natural capacity for prayer and enjoy not just talking, but also listening, to God. In the classroom that is so often driven by data and results, Christian Meditation is a time that is not measured or evaluated, and allows all children to participate on an equal basis.

This presentation will endeavour to build an historical knowledge to understand where Christian Meditation came from, how it fits into our Christian faith, and importantly, how to share this gift with your students from Kindergarten to Year 12, tomorrow in the classroom.

Aims
This presentation will explore the following aspects of Christian Meditation:

  • the historical timeline of Christian Meditation from the Desert Fathers and Mothers of the 4th Century CE to its modern beginnings with Fr John Main and now into the 21st Century.
  • the necessary elements of Stillness, Silence and Simplicity and how each one can be practised successfully.
  • how does this look in my classroom tomorrow?
Duration
Two days:
Storytelling and RE will consists of two and half hours of input, plus two and half hours of input on Christian Meditation.

An additional day is required for demonstrations of Storytelling and Christian Meditation in the classroom context with students.
