Interpreting Scripture:
The Scripture Alive to our Questions and Experience

Spirituality and Formation

Target Audience:  Parishoners and All Staff

  • This offering is designed as part of face to face teaching in the Graduate Certificate unit - THEO800: Foundations for Theological Studies that builds on topic 5 and 6 -  Interpreting the Scriptures.
  • It is also designed as professional development for classroom teachers to better understand the Scriptures for use in the classroom.
  • For all Parishoners and teachers, the course will allow you to delve more deeply into the nature of the Scriptures and how we can unlock their meaning and potential for our lives.
Overview
As a community of love, grounded in the love of the Trinity, we are immersed in the scriptures.  Our task here is guided by the question of:
  1. How are the scriptures to be read?
  2. How are we to interpret them?
Across the day we explore a range of contemporary approaches, opening up various ways that scholars and believers have found allow the scriptures to speak into the reality of our world.

Aims
With this program participants will explore:
  • Philip and the Ethopian eunich: Acts 8: 26-35  How can I unless I have someone to guide me?
  • Sermon on mount or plain: Mt 5:1-10 & Lk 6:20-33
  • The creation narratives: Gen 1 - Gen 2:25
  • Paul and the body metaphor: 1 Cor 12:12-30
  • Zacchaeus the tax collector in the tree: Lk 19:1-10.

How would I interrogate this text if I were:
  • A woman
  • Poor
  • Indigenous
  • Chronically ill
  • Well off
